Symptoms of Seborrheic Dermatitis:
- Seborrheic dermatitis is characterized by red, scaly and itchy patches of skin. Yellow and oily scales also typically form.
- The most commonly affected areas include the scalp, hairline, eyebrows and eyelids, around the nose, or behind the ears. This condition may also form on the chest, back, navel, underarms, breast, groin or buttocks.
Causes of Seborrheic Dermatitis:
- Seborrheic dermatitis is an inflammatory condition that is not well understood, although it does have a genetic component and Caucasians, particularly of Celtic descent, are most susceptible.
- Some newborns develop seborrheic dermatitis when maternal androgens are passed from the mother to the baby across the placenta.
- Conditions such as Parkinson's disease, head injury, and stroke can also be associated with seborrheic dermatitis, and stress and chronic fatigue can make it worse. Times of hormone fluctuation, such as during puberty, can activate the onset.
- This condition is more common among people with oily skin or hair, as well as people with acne or those suffering from psoriasis.
- Seborrheic dermatitis cannot be cured. However, it is manageable.
